POSITION FUNCTION

  • Conducts microscopic, macroscopic and other tests and investigations on samples of metals and alloys for purposes as metallurgical control over products or use in developing new or improved grades and types of metals, alloys or production methods by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Directs laboratory personnel in preparing of samples, such as polishing or etching and designates area of sample where microscopic or macroscopic examination it to be made
  • Studies photomicrographs and performs microscopic examinations on samples to determine metal characteristics such as crystal structure, porosity and homogeneity
  • Interprets findings and prepares drawings, charts and graphs for inclusion in reports for reference or instruction purposes and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions and recommendations
  • Coordinates and participates in performing special tests, such as end-quench hardenability, bend and tensile and grain size tests
  • Evaluate materials and develop machinery and processes to manufacture materials for use in products that must meet specialized design and performance specifications. Develop new uses for known materials. Includes those engineers working with composite materials or specializing in one type of material, such as graphite, metal and metal alloys, ceramics and glass, plastics and polymers, and naturally occurring materials. Includes metallurgists and metallurgical engineers, ceramic engineers, and welding engineers.
  • Liaising with clients to determine and interpret design requirements
  • Provides technical advice about the suitability of metals for different purposes
  • Makes recommendations and advises about product feasibility
  • Develops prototypes and innovative solutions to problems
  • Liaises with engineering and technical staff
  • Oversees operational quality control
  • Develops new test/repair processes

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) or equivalent or four to ten years relevant experience and/or training or a combination of education and experience
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Self-motivated individual
